LA Group Gives Iowa Senate Candidate
ROXANNE CONLIN(D-IA)
Two thumbs Up!
For those of you who haven't met Roxanne Conlin, Senate candidate from Iowa, running against Chuck Grassley, below is a summation of everyone’s very positive feelings about her from an introductory luncheon held at my home in January. I, myself, was blown away, inspired and encouraged to work hard for her. I know it’s all expensive but she’s worth it, and Chuck Grassley should retire to some gopher hole in a fallow field in Iowa. I hope we can do something in the near future to give her candidacy a financial boost, and I hope this gets you thinking about being a part of it.
Onward- Nancy Stephens
And here’s what the group had to say:
“She's smart, funny, tough. I would love to see her take Grizzly Grassley out.
But does this mean I have to go to Iowa? Really nice way to kick off 2010.”
– Eugenie Ross-Leming
“She actually has a spine and, unlike some of our other Senators,
I don’t think she will leave it at the Senate doors.”
- Tim Hoy
“She's an endangered species--a Democrat with a spine and a sense of humor.
Time to arrange for a busload of us to go to Iowa.”
– Sara Nichols
“Roxanne Conlin is one of the most impressive Senate candidates I've met in a while. I really admire her life story. Growing up in a large, Irish Catholic family with no money and an abusive father, working several jobs to help her younger siblings and financing her own way through school. She has spoken up for the rights of women who are victims of rape and abuse, and against discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation. She is a true progressive and would be a truly great gift to the Democratic party with the added bonus of knocking Senator "death panels" Grassley out of Congress!“ – Cheri Shankar
She's a cure for our depression over Blue-Dog Dems.
A smart, funny Democrat with a spine!
–Mary Gwynn
“I was inspired hearing Roxanne today, inspired and hopeful...impressed with her background, her honesty and her willingness to fight for so many issues that impact woman, children, the animals and our environment. Her great sense of humor is a welcome addition amidst so much political craziness…Very impressive!” –Kathy Oliver
Roxanne's smart, decent, personable, and a fierce advocate for everything I believe in - all of which makes her overqualified to be a senator. That said, I'm thinking of moving to Iowa.
–Allan Katz
“She is fabulous. I am so happy I could meet her.”
- Marilyn Barrett
A lifelong fighter and champion of causes that matter, Roxanne Conlin is a true leader who says what she means and means what she says. I appreciate her fearless commitment and dedication to the people, am affected by her gentle and compassionate demeanor and am blown away by her power and conviction.
–Catherine Park
“I thought she was absolutely fantastic…as I told her, like Amy Klobuchar on steroids—and in even deeper camouflage... Can you imagine a more wickedly stealth candidate to go up against Grassley? For those of you who weren’t there, she looks completely prim and proper and schoolmarm-like (she even resembles Grassley a little, in an attractive way, if you can imagine it) and she has delightful energy and wit and an utterly conventional demeanor that gives her the ability to get away with the most devastating zingers and look as if she hasn’t said a thing. To me it seemed she has just what is needed in a state like Iowa, which is at heart much more independent-minded than people imagine (she told us that Grassley had lost 20 points in popularity when his hypocrisy about health care reform became widely known): kind of no-nonsense, commonsense approach that makes progressive ideas seem simply like the sensible and pragmatic thing to do. The fact that she is, as she jokes, a “greedy trial lawyer” speaks well for her ability to get funding...the amount she’s been able to raise in 6 weeks is remarkable...the fact that she can balance that against turning down corporate and PAC funds is a blessing, because her rejection of those will play well against Grassley’s funding sources.. And most of all I was impressed, as I always am when this is the case, that she has nothing to lose—which means that if she gets the seat and has to face going back to her old life as a consequence of showing some spine and standing firm, I’m convinced she wouldn’t hesitate to do it.” –Jamie Wolf

In the district that Rush Limbaugh calls home, Tommy Sowers has Republicans running for cover (and money).
He outraised the incumbent for the last 2 of 3 quarters, rose to the DCCC's top 26 races this cycle, and recently grabbed headlines on CNN, Politico, and Huffington Post.
This is a race to watch, and the other side knows it.
Tommy is a fourth generation native of Missouri's 8th Congressional District, attended Duke University on an ROTC scholarship, and spent eleven years in the Army as a Ranger and Green Beret. Tommy completed two deployments to Iraq and was awarded two Bronze Stars. He has a master's from the London School of Economics and taught political science at West Point for three years before returning home to run for Congress. In his first quarter alone, Tommy raised more than the last ten years of Democratic challengers to the current incumbent combined. He has received the endorsements of Sen. Bob Kerrey, Sen. Bill Bradley, Gen. Wesley Clark, Col. Jack Jacobs, and VoteVets.
The 8th district, despite incredible natural resources and excellent universities, is the 8th poorest of all 435 congressional districts in the nation and ranks dead last for female median income. Over 1/4 of children live in families under the federal poverty line and in some counties, over 45% of people are on food stamps. The Republican incumbent, Jo Ann Emerson, is a former insurance lobbyist and has held the seat since 1996.
