“I thought she was absolutely fantastic…as I told her, like Amy Klobuchar on steroids—and in even deeper camouflage... Can you imagine a more wickedly stealth candidate to go up against Grassley? For those of you who weren’t there, she looks completely prim and proper and schoolmarm-like (she even resembles Grassley a little, in an attractive way, if you can imagine it) and she has delightful energy and wit and an utterly conventional demeanor that gives her the ability to get away with the most devastating zingers and look as if she hasn’t said a thing. To me it seemed she has just what is needed in a state like Iowa, which is at heart much more independent-minded than people imagine (she told us that Grassley had lost 20 points in popularity when his hypocrisy about health care reform became widely known): kind of no-nonsense, commonsense approach that makes progressive ideas seem simply like the sensible and pragmatic thing to do. The fact that she is, as she jokes, a “greedy trial lawyer” speaks well for her ability to get funding...the amount she’s been able to raise in 6 weeks is remarkable...the fact that she can balance that against turning down corporate and PAC funds is a blessing, because her rejection of those will play well against Grassley’s funding sources.. And most of all I was impressed, as I always am when this is the case, that she has nothing to lose—which means that if she gets the seat and has to face going back to her old life as a consequence of showing some spine and standing firm, I’m convinced she wouldn’t hesitate to do it.”
